A Black Friday bundle upgrade is worth it only if it replaces something you already pay for, or something you’d actually buy and use. NordVPN’s Complete and Prime tiers and Surfshark’s One and One+ add tools like a password manager, cloud storage, antivirus, breach monitoring, identity protection and data-broker removal. On Black Friday the extra cost can look tiny. The catch is that bundles often renew at a higher price than the VPN on its own, so judge the upgrade on what you’ll pay across the full term and at renewal.
- NordVPN’s US pricing page currently lists three tiers: Basic, Complete and Prime. The old Plus tier no longer appears there, and tier names differ in some other regions.
- Surfshark sells Starter, One and One+. One adds antivirus and breach alerts; One+ adds Incogni data removal.
- Value each add-on by asking whether it replaces a paid tool you already have, or one you’d otherwise buy.
- Bundles usually renew at a higher rate too. Check the checkout total and the renewal price before upgrading.
First: which tiers are actually on sale?
Plan names change, and older reviews can be misleading. Here’s what we verified on the providers’ own pricing pages in late October 2026:
- NordVPN (US pricing page): Basic, Complete and Prime. “Plus” used to sit between Basic and Complete. It isn’t listed on the current US page, and its features appear to have been folded into Complete. Some regions show other tier names and combinations, so the page you see may differ from ours.
- Surfshark: Starter, One and One+.
Prices change during sale periods and vary by region, currency and tax. We don’t quote them here. Check the checkout total, or see what we’ve verified in Today’s Deals.
What NordVPN’s tiers add
| Tier | What it adds (as listed in late 2026) |
|---|---|
| Basic | The VPN, plus scam and phishing protection via NordVPN’s DNS filtering and basic Dark Web Monitor for a limited number of email addresses |
| Complete | Everything in Basic, plus a desktop antivirus, ad and tracker blocker, the NordPass password manager, 1 TB of encrypted cloud storage, expanded dark web monitoring (more emails plus phone, card and ID numbers), call and message protection on supported devices, and bank transaction monitoring for US accounts |
| Prime (US) | Everything in Complete, plus identity theft insurance, cyber extortion insurance, 1-bureau credit monitoring, a credit score and credit freeze assistance, with additional terms |
NordVPN also offers Incogni (data-broker removal) and a dedicated IP as optional paid add-ons at checkout on any tier. For a fuller breakdown, see NordVPN Basic vs Complete vs Prime.
What Surfshark’s tiers add
| Tier | What it adds |
|---|---|
| Starter | The VPN with unlimited devices, ad and pop-up blocking, and Alternative ID (a generated persona and masked email for sign-ups) |
| One | Everything in Starter, plus antivirus with real-time protection, Surfshark Alert (data-leak and breach alerts) and Surfshark Search (a private search tool) |
| One+ | Everything in One, plus Incogni, which sends removal requests to data brokers on your behalf and repeats them periodically |
Surfshark’s pricing page also lists identity theft coverage for eligible US residents (excluding New York State) and notes that Incogni is available only to residents of certain countries. Check the plan comparison on the checkout page to see which tier includes what where you live. More detail is in Surfshark Price Per Month: Starter vs One vs One+.
What each add-on really is, and how to value it
The question to ask about every add-on is: does this replace something I already pay for, or something I’d actually buy? If not, it’s worth nothing to you, whatever the bundle page says it’s “worth.”
| Add-on | What it does | Worth it if… | Skip if… |
|---|---|---|---|
| Password manager | Stores and fills passwords across devices | You don’t use one yet, or you pay for one you’d drop | You already use one you like, including free browser or OS options, and won’t switch |
| Encrypted cloud storage | Storage space for private files | You need somewhere private for documents and would otherwise pay for it | Your existing cloud storage is enough |
| Antivirus / malware protection | Scans files and blocks malicious downloads or sites | You’d otherwise pay for a separate antivirus | You rely on your OS’s built-in protection and are happy with it |
| Breach / dark web monitoring | Alerts you when your email or details show up in a leak | You want ongoing alerts in one place | Free breach-alert services already cover what you need |
| Identity insurance and credit monitoring | Coverage and help after identity theft, plus credit alerts | You’re in an eligible region and don’t already have this through a bank, card, employer or insurer | You already have similar coverage. Check before paying twice |
| Data-broker removal (Incogni) | Sends removal requests to people-search and data-broker sites | You want this done for you over time, and you live in a supported country | You’d rather opt out manually, or the service doesn’t cover your country |
Note: Some banks, credit cards, employers and home or renters insurance policies already include identity theft protection or credit monitoring. Check your existing benefits before paying for Prime or similar coverage.
The renewal trap with bundles
Black Friday upgrades are often presented as “just a little more per month.” That’s the intro price. When the term ends, the bundle usually renews at its own higher rate, and the gap between a VPN-only renewal and a bundle renewal can be larger than the gap at signup.
- Compare total charged today for the VPN-only tier and the bundle, for the same term.
- Find both renewal prices. They’re usually in the fine print under the plan or in the terms.
- Add up the cost over the period you’ll keep it, including at least one renewal if you’re likely to stay.
- Subtract what you’d save by canceling tools the bundle replaces. If the result isn’t clearly in your favor, buy the basic tier.
- Set a reminder before renewal to downgrade or turn off auto-renewal if you stop using the extras.
Watch out: Some add-ons, especially identity coverage and data removal, are limited to certain countries. If you aren’t eligible, you may be paying for features you can’t use. Check eligibility at checkout.
So, upgrade or not?
- Upgrade if the bundle replaces at least one paid tool you’ll actually cancel, and the renewal math still works.
- Upgrade if you’ve been meaning to start using a password manager or data-broker removal and you’d choose this one anyway.
- Stay basic if you already have good tools for these jobs, or if you mainly want a VPN for streaming or travel.
- Stay basic if you’re a deal-hopper who switches providers every term, because moving passwords and files every couple of years gets old fast.

Frequently asked questions
Does NordVPN still sell the Plus plan?
Plus isn’t listed on NordVPN’s US pricing page as of late October 2026. The current US tiers are Basic, Complete and Prime, and Complete includes the password manager that used to define Plus. Tier names vary in some regions.
What’s the difference between Surfshark One and One+?
One+ adds Incogni, the data-broker removal service, on top of One’s antivirus, breach alerts and private search. Incogni is only available to residents of certain countries.
Is NordVPN Prime worth it?
Only if you’re in the US, want identity theft insurance and credit monitoring, and don’t already get them through a bank, card, employer or insurer. Otherwise Complete or Basic is usually better value.
Do bundle upgrades renew at a higher price?
Usually, yes. Bundles typically have their own renewal rate, which is higher than the VPN-only renewal. Check the renewal price in the plan terms before buying.
Can I downgrade later?
Usually you can choose a cheaper tier at renewal, but how and when depends on the provider. Check your account settings or ask support before your renewal date.
